A dense ground cover with glossy, deep green leaves, small creamy flowers and attractive, pinkish winged fruit. This fast-growing prostrate form of the species grows to 30cm high and 2 to 4m wide, depending on site conditions. It is very tolerant of heavy shade, and also grows in full sun, and helps to suppress weeds. Ideal for under trees, on banks and road verges. The species grows in a wide range of soils including well-drained sand, sandy loam, limestone sand, gravelly loam, sandy clay and clay loam. It flowers mainly in winter, followed by the colourful hops in late spring and summer, but the lush foliage is the main attraction. Origin – south west and south coast.
